Principal's Corner

I am excited to share some plans for reopening in the fall! Please keep in mind that no plan is ever going to make everyone happy nor will it meet everyone's needs. This plan does, however, allow us to provide some flexibility and options for our families while obeying the law and safely maintaining much of what makes Garner a truly exceptional educational experience for our kids. Please "subscribe to posts" below to receive any updates as they are added. We will also update Dojo and Facebook as plans evolve with the times. :) Thanks! As always, email dshaw@garnerisd.net with questions.

A New Normal

posted Mar 23, 2020, 7:30 AM by Diane Shaw

As someone who usually thrives on excitement and change, it is unsettling to find myself overwhelmed with the uncertainty of each day. Regardless of what does change over the next weeks or months, a few things will stay constant. We are here for you and your children. Facebook will continue to host schoolwide announcements and fun connection points, and Dojo will be our primary communication tool for academics. Staff will contact you and your child once a week to see how everything is going. If possible, we may be making home visits for kiddos we don't get ahold of and to deliver technology or materials as needed. You may contact me directly through ClassDojo, email dshaw@garnerisd.net, or leave a voicemail at (940)682-4251 ext. 101. Please remind your children daily how much they are loved and missed around here. Don't stress about the work. Do what you can. Reach out for assistance as needed. Play board games, build a living room fort out of sheets, read with flashlights, and enjoy this amazing opportunity to slow down and experience the lost art of relaxation. #GarnerGreatnessGoingStrong

20/20 Vision

posted Feb 10, 2020, 10:44 AM by Diane Shaw

Each spring my kids and I make the annual trek to the eye doctor to determine who needs new prescriptions and whose eyesight is holding steady. It's fascinating to go through the various tests and wonder what it all means. All I really understand after all is said and done is what has gotten worse and what we are going to do about it. The bottom line is that I value my family's vision, and I rely on others to help clarify and preserve it. We operate in a similar way here at Garner. Each student's growth is considered on an individual basis, and we are constantly looking for new ways to communicate and collaborate with families to assist each one along their unique educational path. To this end, we are trying something new: STUDENT LED CONFERENCES. Students are taking ownership of their learning by preparing a summary of their goals and progress to share with families in the coming weeks. Be on the lookout for information about this exciting new endeavor.

We are a small school preparing youth for a big future, and I am proud to work alongside our staff, trustees, community members, and especially students & their families to provide a well-rounded, rigorous experience for all. Please follow us on Facebook to see updates, announcements, and highlights of our daily #garnergreatness.

Email dshaw@garnerisd.net, call (940)682-4251 ext.101, or stop by the office 7:30am-4pm.
I'd love to hear from you!
